Building a Sustainability Strategy with Avondale Artist Village
Creating an in-depth sustainability roadmap for Avondale Artist Village’s launch and preparing for B Corp certification.
Their Challenge
Avondale Artist Village is on a mission to help artists thrive both creatively and economically with a new kind of social enterprise. Avondale Artist Village hopes to set a high-water mark for cultural placemaking by developing a cluster of local small businesses (like a theatre, a restaurant, a hotel, and even a winery), a tourist destination, and a community impact organization housing a unique long-term artist residency program.
As a social enterprise, they’re committed to establishing this village with sustainability at the forefront, from construction to employee management to community engagement. They enlisted R&G to first establish their brand, then create an in-depth sustainability strategy taking them up to their launch date, and prepping their team to achieve B Corp certification once operational.
Our Solution
In collaboration with an Indigenous graphic designer, R&G created the Avondale Artist Village visual identity and brand toolkit. Then we established a sustainability implementation roadmap so the Avondale team could hit the ground running. We developed this strategy through extensive stakeholder communication, and with preparation for B Corp certification top of mind.
With pillars based on the five B Corp pillars (governance, workers, community, environment and customers), we identified priority areas and assigned each a corresponding UN Sustainable Development Goal(s). We also provided several additional items they could consider implementing at a later date so the Avondale Artist Village team could continue improving as they learn and grow.
THE IMPACT
Avondale Artist Village now has the communication tools and sustainability guidance to build and launch their social enterprise while meeting the highest standards in sustainability. If our ambitious, but achievable strategy is fully adopted, they’ll be leading their industry by setting the new best practice, breaking down barriers to employment and arts access, and supporting local social and economic development.
